Happy New Year!

Sort of. Kind of. I guess. A lot of stuff is going on, so here's what you need to know:

1. Sea Shepherd's Cove Guardians are still on the ground in Taiji, Japan, opposing the slaughter and captivity of dolphins and small cetaceans. I am not participating in that campaign this year, but right now, as I type this, four dolphins are arriving at an aquarium in Japan. The dolphins spent 15 hours being driven across Japan, crammed into coffin-like crates just for human entertainment. Cove Guardians followed the truck and are livestreaming the arrival here: http://livestream.seashepherd.org/ (assuming I hit "Publish Post" soon enough). 2. Speaking of the Cove Guardians, Vegan Drinks will benefit the campaign tomorrow. We'll have amazing food from Monks Meats and Mister Sister and some great raffle prizes, including hard to find, vintage Sea Shepherd gear and DVDs signed by Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson.

3. Sea Shepherd NYC will be tabling the Red Hot Chili Peppers show at the Barclays Center on Saturday, January 30. If you're there, come by.

4. We'll also be at the John Butler Trio's shows at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg, February 3 and 4, respectively.

5. Then on the fifth, fellow Cove Guardian, Dam Guardian and Sea Shepherd NYC coordinator Ethan and I will be speaking at a free screening of Blackfish at Bluestockings on the Lower East Side. Free vegan refreshments will be available as well, so don't miss it.

6. THEN, on February 16, we'll have our annual Whalentine's Day Bake Sale at MooShoes, also on the Lower East Side. You all know how delicious that event is, so don't get me started.

We hope to have a volunteer training some time in February, before our tables at the Vegetarian Food Festival and Beneath the Sea dive show in March, so if you'd like to get involved and live in the NYC area, please email nyc @ seashepherd . org to attend.

Upcoming Events

It's that time of year again!

 

This time, we're raising money for Food Not Bombs NYC. FNB generally depends on donations and reclaimed food, but volunteers often go out of pocket for non-perishables like oils and grains as well as plates and cutlery.

AND! SAVE THE DATE! Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Galapagos Director Captain Alex Cornelisson will be in NYC on May 1. We'll be showing the short film Galapagos, followed by a Q&A with the captain.

There are so many events coming up in NYC over the next few months it's a little overwhelming. Here's a selction:

Monday, January 28: Dinner with Sea Shepherd at Blossom Chelsea

Eat, drink and be merry because Blossom is donating 10% of their receipts to Sea Shepherd on Monday! Blossom is located at 187 9th Avenue, NYC. They seat for dinner 5:15 PM to 9:30 PM and reservations are recommended. Make one at blossomnyc.com or by calling 212.627.1144 ext. 5.

Thursday, January 31 - Saturday, February 2: The 3rd Annual New York Wildlife Conservation Film Festival
The festival will be full of great films and speakers, including a local Sea Shepherd Cove Guardian. His presentation about Operation Infinite Patience will be part of Thursday night's program. Tickets and more information here. Use the code "sea shepherd" for $1 off.

Sunday, February 10: The Vegan Bake-Off Dessert Competition*

Sunday, February 17: Sea Shepherd's Second Annual Whalentine's Day Bake Sale

Tuesday, February 19: At the Edge of the World Screening + Q&A w/film director and crew
The film is kind of like a prequel to Whale Wars. We'll be showing it at NYU, for a suggested donation of $10 per person (but everything is appreciated and no one will be turned away, as long as there's room. Get all the details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/243281942471065/

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

No, not Christmas. Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale time!

Yes, the absolutely amazingly lovely people at MooShoes are opening their doors to us once again. This time, we're raising money for the courageous and dedicated Darwin Animal Doctors. Not only is DAD the only vet-staffed, full-time, year round clinic serving all animals in the Galapagos UN World Heritage Site, but they've been pitching in to help the animals down at Occupy Wall Street and are generally rad individuals.

Oh, Hello!

Are you still here? Sorry about that. I've got two important things to talk about today.

Thing the first: PIE. Yes, pie. Vegan Pie in the Sky is due out next month and it's amazing. If you have tastebuds, you should go preorder it. Go on. I'll wait.

Got it? Good. You're welcome. All the recipes are delicious, most of them are easy and some of them are fast enough to make after work (maybe with a bit of advance prep work). Here's a small sampling of the ones I tested. Do not judge them by my photos, because if there's anything I'm worse at than baking pretty things, it's photography.

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale 3.0

I swear I cook for more than just bake sales. For example, last week, I tried my hand at Vegan Dad's Puff Pastry recipes and ended up with a delightful batch of pain au chocolat (bonus points for added raspberries). I'm also testing for Isa and Terry's upcoming pie book (raspberry pie! chocolate pudding pie!). And I'm working on my friends' birthday cake. So it's not that I've stopped doing kitchen things, I've just stopped making real food. Oops.

Anyway, this is a thing that's happening:

A BAKE SALE!

Sea Shepherd NYC will be at MooShoes this coming Sunday, January 23, raising money for Operation No Compromise, Sea Shepherd's 7th Antarctic whale defense campaign. We'll have vegan baked goods galore, merch, and the answers to all the questions you may have about Sea Shepherd. Stop by and find out how YOU can help Neptune's Navy defend our oceans.

Sea Shepherd Sunday Sale Success

So Sunday saw Sea Shepherd New York's vegan bake sale in Montclair, NJ, where we raised nearly $2,700 for Sea Shepherd. We were hosted by the lovely Go Lightly Eco-Store, and received generous (and delicious!) donations from The Cinnamon Snail, Rutherford Pancake House and RAWbundant in addition to all our lovely homemade baked goods. I contributed some roasted garlic biscuits (my own recipe) and sea life themed gingerbread cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. The biscuits didn't look like much of anything, but here are some process shots of the cookies:

Another Bake Sale!

Check it out! Go Lightly in Montclair, NJ is hosting a vegan bake sale this Sunday, October 3 with all the proceeds going to Sea Shepherd! The Sea Shepherd New York team will be there selling merch, eating sweets and answering any questions you may have about what Sea Shepherd is up to and how you can help.

If you're in New York, Montclair isn't hard to get to. NJ Transit trains out of Penn Station and the DeCamp buses out of Port Authority both go there on Sunday.

Woldwide Vegan Bake Sale 2010

Yes, it's that time again. Time for the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale. If you're in the NYC area and want to bake, buy, or participate in some other way, here's what you need to know:

When: Sunday, April 25, 2010. 12-5 PM
Where: MooShoes. 78 Orchard Street (B or D train to Grand Street or F, J, or M train to Delancey)
To Benefit: Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary

If you'd like, you can RSVP via Facebook, and/or use our nifty sign up sheet (please note that the sign up sheet has two pages: one for baked goods and one for things like plates, bags, etc.).

A representative from Woodstock will be around to answer any questions you may have about the sanctuary and hook you up with an animal to sponsor.

NYC's Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti was on Sunday, January 31. And I think we can call it a success. We raised a total of $5,026 for Doctors Without Borders and had a fun day with amazing people and great treats.

Bake Sales for Haiti

As promised, here are the details for the upcoming NYC bake sale:

Sunday, January 31, from 11:30 AM to 6 PM, we'll be selling treats and raffling off handicrafts at Moo Shoes (78 Orchard Street, between Delancey & Broome, right near the Essex/Delancey F, J, M, Z stop and the Grand Street B, D stop).

The proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders.

Ode to a Chocolate Chip Cookie

The last batch of cookies I made for the people who contributed to our bake sale was the chocolate chip cookies from Isa and Terry's upcoming Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. I've made and posted about them too many times to count, so I won't get all redundant about how easy, fast and delicious they are, or about how everyone who's ever tried them has loved these crunchy cookies (once I solved the crumbling issue - make them a wee bit smaller).

Bake Sale Total

The last of our donations have come straggling in and I'm pleased to report Brooklyn raised $1,180 for Farm Sanctuary and Sea Shepherd through the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale. Hugs for everyone!

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale Wrap Up

We held our second Brooklyn bake sale on Sunday and a wonderful time was had by all. We ate, drank, made merry, sang, danced and raised over $1000 for Farm Sanctuary and Sea Shepherd (and we're not done yet, so if you'd like to contribute, keep reading).
